You certainly don't need one to get started with the Looking Glass Portrait but if you want to experiment with holographic video recording, saving holographic messages and sending these messages to friends and family with Looking Glass Portrait units, we would recommend getting one.
Though, you really don't need a depth camera to get started or even use Looking Glass Portrait. This is only for those who are looking to start experimenting with holographic video recording.
